The Quiet Power Of Mýa: Elegance Without The Ego

Driven, grounded, and proof that real ones still exist. Mýa is loyal and low-key. Onstage, she delivers the kind of captivating, high-calibre performance that secures her place among the all time-divas. But the moment the lights fade, she returns to a life of humility and intention. offstage, Mýa embraces stillness — meditation, reflection, and a conscious lifestyle far removed from tabloid drama. She is elegance without ego, a true artist shaped by depth, discipline, and authenticity. Mýa is back with a new album Retrospect full of hits and massive collaborations with hip-hop legends including Snoop Dogg, Too $hort and 21 Savage. Mýa doesn't follow the trends she starts them.

rganisations that focus on a multitude of things like, arts education for children, animal protection, self esteem & higher education for young adults, alongside grassroots, emergency crisis organisations, doing real on the ground work to help those affected by disasters. Is it elevating lives and operating truthfully?

When you think back to the start of your career, what’s the first moment that still feels surreal when you realised, “this is really happening”?

I think hearing my very first, debut song “It’s All About Me” on the radio and seeing the music video play on networks like BET, MTV & VH1 did it for me.

Mýa photographed by Joe Dadic at the W Hotel, Melbourne Australia.

“Case Of The Ex” was such a cultural moment and remains iconic today. what do you remember about filming the music video in the desert? Looking back, are there any details or behind-the-scenes memories that fans might not know?
It was an extremely early morning and pretty dark during our road travel to get to the Mojave desert for the hair and make up process to begin in the early morning hours to ensure we had enough day light to shoot the video. My studded denim vest was not lined by the wardrobe stylist, So on top of sunburn I was being scraped up during every take, to the point of bleeding with sand in my wounds. They eventually had to add moleskin to the vest, which you can spot in certain scenes in the video.

Longevity in this industry is rare. what do you think has been the key to staying not just active, but true to yourself through tt all?
I Really Love Music And I Really Love Performing. As A Child Of The Arts, It’s Honestly My Happy Place. My Independent Journey Has Been An Absolute Blessing Allowing Me To Stay In Childlike State Artistically, Learn The Business And Ultimately Protect My Love For Music & Art.

Is It Difficult For You To Make New Friends? What Qualities Do You Look For In The People You Let Into Your Inner Circle?

It’s Quite Easy To Make New Acquaintances. It However Takes A While To Allow Anyone Access As A Friend.

What’s Your Favorite Scent? The Scent Of A Freshly Picked, Non-GMO Orange From A Tropical Tree, Or A Freshly Baked Sweet Potato Pie That Transports Me Home.

Are there any plans to release your back catalog on vinyl?

My sophomore album Fear of Flying just celebrated its 25th anniversary with a limited

edition double vinyl booklet release in 2025. It is now sold out, but yes absolutely during

anniversaries. Moodring’s 25th anniversary is next in 2028.

What are three surprising things on your tour rider that fans wouldn’t expect?

My hospitality rider is super healthy which they’d expect, but I’d say maybe a space

heater is a more unexpected item. I especially need them for shows and tours that occur

in the winter months, cold buildings and territories. It’s so risky attempting to sing and

dance in cold temperatures.
